The original version, HAXAN, must be seen to be believed. Even though it's presented as a documentary, the fantasy sequences are unforgettable.
Haxan is a marvelous film. It was one of those films that one read about, but never saw. When I finally saw it I wasn't sure about it. It was the version with Burroughs and the jazz score put me off. It was like watching an addict's fever dream. It wasn't till I finally saw the Criterion dvd that I got the full power of the film. It was truly nightmarish and disturbing. Oddly beautiful.
